Potatoes & Phosphites – Preventative Pathogen Control From Seedling To Post-Harvest

Bothered by Blight?

In potato production it is important to implement proper management programs to ensure your crops success not only through its growth cycle, but also protect tubers during storage. Phosphite can provide broad-spectrum protection and be easily incorporated into your current management program.

Phosphate, Phosphite, What’s the Difference?

Phosphates are important to potato development. They encourage rooting and tuber set and help to “bulk” tubers during the late season. But, in recent years studies conducted in the potato growing regions of North America, have shown the great potential of Phosphorous acid-based products, or Phosphites, for control and suppression of many potato pathogens and disease, in addition to influencing overall plant health, and increasing yield.

Of significant importance, Phosphite form (PO3), moves systematically within the plant and have a very low environmental impact. Trial results indicate that phosphite primes the plant for an earlier and more intense response to infection and that SA (salicylic acid) would mediate this response

Preventative vs. Curative

Phosphite products are composed of mono and dibasic sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of phosphorous acid which are highly soluble for rapid uptake. Applied as foliar and root drenches as part of a regular maintenance program, phosphite work to mutually inhibit pathogen growth and reproduction, and also have been shown to induce systemic resistance (ISR), encouraging the plant to naturally fend off disease.

Phosphites can be quite successful when used for their fungicidal properties in preventing and combating pathogen production for intrinsic resistance development and control of aggressive oomycetes like pink rot; and soil-borne, overwintering fungal infections such as late blight, silver scurf, early blight, Verticillium wilt (Verticillium spp.) and other potato diseases both in the field and in storage.

When phosphite products are incorporated along with fungicide applications, they are seen to improve disease management and control while conjointly aiding in essential processes like photosynthesis. Even when applied alone, phosphite products have established delays in the onset of disease through ISR and preserved potato tissue integrity, following harvest, against rot.

What to know about “TKO”!

“TKO” Phosphite 0-29-26 contains optimal concentrations of phosphorus acid with a near neutral pH. “TKO” moves easily throughout plant tissue via xylem and translocation in the phloem, delivering growth and immune stimulating benefits. When used in conjunction with fungicide, (we s uggest Companion® Biological Fungicide) “TKO” can significantly improve the efficacy of the fungicide both preventatively and at time of pathogen infection.
